DIY Open When Letters

Hello & welcome back to another post!

Today, I’m going to be sharing a DIY with you. I recently was scrolling through Pinterest, and I stumbled across Open When letters. These letters are great for your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your best friend, your siblings, long distance relationships–basically, open when letters are perfect for any relationship. They are extremely easy to make, and are really thoughtful.

So, let’s get right into the post!

What are Open When letters, you ask? They’re extremely popular, so chances are you’ve heard of them. I think the photos sum up what they are, anyway. Basically, you give these letters to someone (I gave these to my bestie), and they open the letters depending on what they need. For example, I made a card saying “Open When You’re Having A Bad Day”, and whenever my friend is sad, she’ll have something to cheer her up.

You will need envelopes, Sharpies, paper, and a few hours! These may look easy, and they are, but each one takes about ten minutes.

First, you need to decide what each letter is going to be. Here are some ideas:

  • Open when you’re hungry
  • Open when you’re sad
  • Open when you’re happy
  • Open when you need a laugh
  • Open when you want to work out
  • Open when you’re annoyed with me
  • Open when you’re angry
  • Open when you’re bored

And etc. You can make as many as you want! I made enough to last my friend a few months.

Once you have everything planned out, you can start filling the envelopes! I really can’t tell you what to put in them, because Open When letters are pretty personal, and what you’re going to put inside really depends on the person.

For example, for the “Open When You’re Bored”, I put in some riddles, a mandala to color, and colored pencils. For the “Open When You’re Sad”, I put in some pictures and wrote a lot of letters and quotes down to make her feel better. I included candy and photos in some of them to make it more fun. 🙂 If you really aren’t sure what to put in each letter, look up ideas on the internet or on Pinterest, and you’ll get a lot of inspiration.

This is a really cute idea that I found on Pinterest. I made this little “Take What You Need” thing for the “Open When You Need Motivation”. I also included some quotes and wrote a little letter for her in that envelope.

Just make sure you have an envelope with the rules! I limited my friend to opening two letters per week, or more if she is having a bad week.

Open When letters are a really personal, fun craft, and I’m sure that if you make them, your loved one will adore them. I finished all the letters on a lazy, rainy Sunday with nothing to do.

Hope you enjoyed this post! Thank you for reading!
