Post Swap! With the Scatter Brained Seamstress

Hello, everyone! Today Kate and I swapped posts. She has a post for all of you, and you can find my post over at her blog here. Without further ado, let me give the spotlight to Kate!

Hello, fashionistas! I’m so excited to be here at Abi’s blog, Freckled Fashionista!!! If you don’t know me, I’m Kate from Scatterbrained Seamstress!

I got my first sewing machine almost two years ago to date (minus a month or two), and have been sewing since about a year ago. I love everything about sewing in general and hope to grow my talent as I grow older!

My life has been a bit hectic recently with school, finals, and my baby sister who fractured her arm and had to have surgery. Thankfully I’ve still had time for some sewing!

I sewed Robert Kaufman’s Trail Tote. unnamed.jpgThe second I saw the picture I knew fabricworm’s vast amount of adorable fabrics would fit this bag perfectly! So right when the fabric arrived I sewed it up as fast as I could!

90% of this bag went super duper smoothly. The darts, cutting it out, the strap. Everything until the last few steps. There was supposed to be piping, but I accidentally sewed it to the wrong side of the fabric so it ended up on the inside of the bag. Sewing it all up was hard too, and so was hemming the top.

My favorite aspect definitely has to be the extendable strap and the front pocket. It fits my Eos, a pack of tissues, my phone, and a pack of gum perfectly.

It also features a magnetic snap and an inside pocket. Isn’t this lining fabric adorable?!

I also sewed a coordinating bi-fold wallet. This tutorial was perfect, clear, and super easy! I love how the wallet turned out.

unnamed-4.jpg
It features a magnetic snap, six card holder spots, and coin and dollar bill storage. The lining (the lovely grey fabric) was not supposed to show, but I rather love the strip of contrast along the top.

It fits perfectly in the inside pocket and looks quite snazzy, if I do say so myself :D.

Now for some action shots:

….and holding the bag awkwardly.

I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here!

New designs and Thoughts On Project Runway

It’s been almost a month since I last posted. It feels good to finally be writing to a new post! I have a very big (sponsored!!) post coming up on the 21st of September, but I’m not allowed to share any details…I’m super excited about it, though! I’m working on the muslins for this project currently, and I cannot wait to show you what it is!

Oh, and guess who’s birthday is on the 26th of August? I can’t wait for that either! I’m trying to be paitent, but I’m counting down the days!

I’ve been doing a lot of designing to keep myself occupied, so I thought I would show you a couple…

The first design I’m showing you is a back to school look. They’re kind of ugly, I was just expirmenting, but I like the plaid skirt on the design on the far right.

IMG_6926

I love this design, though! It’s a plaid trench coat with a mini dress underneath. I have a new obsession with trench coats all of the sudden, which is weird, since I don’t even own any trench coats and I would never wear one anyway.

I love this as well! It’s a jumpsuit with a faux fur vest.

Lastly, my favorite. A dress with a really long floor-length coat/cape/dress/what do you call this? Anyway, I like whatever it is. I have a poll for you now, just because I can:

Did any of you watch the new Project Runway Season 14 episode?

project-runway_612x380I

I never like when there’s a new season of a reality tv show, because I get to used to the characters and their personalities, so I don’t like new seasons. It’s going to take me a while to get used to new people, new challenges…it’s so weird!

I’m interested how this new season is going to play out. My favorite is Ashley, she was the one with the purple/pink-ish hair that won the challenge. Instantly, my least favorite is Marlene, because she never seems to stop talking! That’s annoying! The next episode looks interesting–they have to make clothes out of cards. It looks like this is going to be a very unconventional season! Have you seen the new season?

And now I have to close this post with another poll. I sometimes post about sewing, and sometimes designing, and I’m not sure which I’m leaning more towards.

Thank you, have a great week!

New Design

Hello Fashionistas!

I made a new design! These days my fashion designs linger in my head for a month or two before I acutally draw them. Also, the other day I just found my sketchbook that has been missing for three months.

It’s really simple; the skirt with the thorns is the main detail of the outfit. It’s a very rough, whimsical design, almost like something out of a fairytale. I really like it. I didn’t color it in because I like the black and white colors.

And now I have an annoucement. I want your sewing and/or fashion design stories to post on my blog at the end of the month. They can be funny, or a mistake you made during sewing, or anything you want! You can send your stories to me here or in the comments. I love reading stories, especially when they are about fashion and sewing.

My Sewing Room

Hello Freckled Fashionistas! I’m sitting on my back porch right now in a sundress soaking in the nice breeze and fresh air.

My sewing room used to be in my bedroom until my mother suprised me with a separate space for me to sew. Today I’m going to give you a tour.

First are my framed vintage sewing patterns over my vintage table and machine and sewing box. (I just  realized after taking the pictures that one of them is crooked.)

I had 2 yards of this beautiful fabric and I ended up using it to make a couple throw pillows and pillowcases. It may not have been the best thing I could do with it, but I’m pleased with the outcome.

You might recognize this dress from last year.

This basket is just for extra fabric and bits and bobs.

This fabric shelf is pretty much just filled with children prints (I’m working on a child collection, but more on that later), because I keep my clothing fabric in a seperate container in my room.

Sneak peak on a vest I’m working on!

How’s your sewing room (if you have one)? Let me know in the comments! Happy Sewing!

Design Of The Day

Hello Fellow Fashionistas! Last night I managed to get in a design before I fell asleep.

imageimage

The main look in the three outfits is the interesting pattern made by triangles and squares mixed together. I chose not to color it in, because I’m not really sure what colors would go with it.

What do you think? Give me some feedback in the comments.

Little Black Dress…

Hello Fellow Fashionistas! They all say every woman looks good in a little black dress, which is why I made one for my mannequin.

I made everything except for the belt–which is from Circo. Well, what do you think? I’d love feedback. Thanks!

P.S. It’s been a hectic week–I’ll have to post Which Sketch Is Better #3 next week. Sorry!
